History, as we know it, has a way of repeating itself. As is obvious, Santayana's words about the perils of repeating mistakes from before are often ignored. The latest instance is the current COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of similar coronavirus breakouts in the recent past - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2013 - the world has been caught napping.
It's during moments of adversity that humankind exhibits innovation of the highest order. Nowhere is this truer than during armed conflicts that pit humans against their most dangerous adversaries, other humans. And while the cybersecurity landscape is not a battleground with fallen bodies, there's truly a war ongoing with hostile threat actors using a variety of evolving attack vectors to compromise information assets. There are cybersecurity lessons to be learned from armed conflicts of old. This session covers some notable events from ancient, medieval and modern warfare, and the lessons that translate well in today's world of ransomware, phishing and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
